Lymphedema Treatment

Lymphedema is caused by blockage of the lymph passages which drain fluid from tissues and let immune cells travel where they are needed. Lymphedema can’t be cured, but it can be effectively managed with regular visits to your physician.

At AFAC we believe in a multi-faceted approach to treating lymphedema. A successful care plan contains several elements including:

  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Compression bandaging
  • Exercise and education
  • Pneumatic sequential compression pumps

You are the most important factor in your lymphedema management. Our goal is to provide you with the tools and support to relieve your pain and discomfort and reduce the risk of serious complications with a proven and effective treatment plan.

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) is a gentle form of massage used to drain lymph passages and improve the function of the immune system. MLD is most commonly used to treat patients with lymphedema – the blockage of lymph passages. Outcomes of MLD massage include increased range of motion and improved function in affected limbs.

Since the 1930s MLD massage has been effective in cleansing the body and improving the function of the lymphatic system. MLD is painless and effective and unlike other massage modalities, no lotions or oils are used.

Cold Laser Therapy/Low Level Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy, also called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), is used by soldiers, athletes, diabetics and many others to treat pain, minor injury and inflammation.

A painless, low-intensity laser is moved across the muscle for a few minutes to reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing.  Treatments are quick and patients experience no heat or irritation.  Cold laser therapy is often sought by patients interested in acupuncture but reluctant to be stuck with needles.

Cold laser therapy is used to:

  • Relax muscles
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Release serotonin and endorphins
  • Stimulate blow flow to the skin – essential for diabetics

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is a simple method of administering anti-inflammatory medication while avoiding the side effects common in oral or injection methods. The non-invasive procedure is ideal to deliver medicine to inflamed tendons and sore joints without punctures or tunneling.

ULTRASOUND THERAPY

Ultrasound has been used for decades to heal tissue and reduce pain in patients with a variety of conditions. At AFAC we use this deep-tissue treatment to eliminate symptoms in patients with plantar fasciitis, heel pain, deep tissue injury and any other inflammation of ligaments, muscles or joints. Sound waves are delivered painlessly through the surface of the skin, speeding up cell metabolism, improving circulation, and reducing inflammation and irritation of the nerves. Ultrasound is most effective when combined with other therapies like exercises and proper footwear.
